Customs Brokers are experts about importing and exporting particular products or commodities into a country. They advise individuals and companies about international trade, entry procedures, valuation, classification and duties and taxes. Customs Brokers are skilled individuals who classify and lodge clearers for import and export shipments by liaising directly with customers.
Tasks and duties
- Providing organisations with information and paperwork that helps them ship their goods out of the country and helping businesses import goods successfully by clearing customs.
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge about the latest tariffs and fees that Australian businesses are required to pay, in addition to ensuring compliance with biosecurity and other requirements.
- Arranging permissions, licences or other approvals to ensure the smooth importation of particular types of goods.
This role suits individuals who are highly motivated with excellent problem solving and time management skills.

In Australia, all Customs Brokers are required to be licensed by the Department of Home Affairs and are required to undergo training in addition to regular Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
- 1.There are three categories of Customs Brokers: corporate, sole trader and nominee. Regardless of which category you pursue, you’ll need to complete an approved course of study. The current approved course of study is a Diploma of Customs Broking (TLI50822).
- 2.To receive your licence, you must also demonstrate that you have acquired custom broking experience in the workplace.
- 3.While not a mandatory requirement, some organisations may require you to sit a national examination to ensure you have the knowledge required of a customs broker.
- 4.Once you have your Customs Broker’s licence, it may be granted for a period of up to three years. You must also commit to undertaking CPD each year to ensure that your knowledge and understanding of changes impacting the industry remains up-to-date.
